| Built in 1867, St. Anthony's on lower School St., was originally called the Church of the Redeemer, the first and only Universalist church in Webster. It was built by Webster builder Vernon Kibby and its first minister was the Rev. George J. Sanger. In 1912, the church was sold at auction to the Slovak Catholics who had been worshipping at the Polish Catholic Church. The Slovak community grew and they renovated the church and bought two adjacent buildings for a convent and rectory. They later added a school on land behind the church on High St. which serves today as the Webster Senior Center. The Slovak congregation continued to grow under the leadership of Father Joseph Ferenz and in 1978, the School St. church was demolished and a new church was built in Dudley. | |
